5 of the Worst Military MREs of All Time

Group of packaged MREs

Military MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat) are a shared experience between the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Air Force. No matter your branch or rank, you’ve had to stomach a few of these at one point or another. While not all of them are bad, these 5 MREs win for being the most disgusting of all time.

1.) Chicken a la King

Chicken a la King is possibly the worst of the bad MREs.

Ask any Soldier, Sailor, Coastguardsman, Marine, or Airman what their least favorite MRE was – 99% of the time, this is what they say.

2.) Veggie Omelet

Jokingly called the ‘vomelet’ for its vomit-inducing texture and flavor, as well as its appearance, this delectable MRE only lasted a few years before it was pulled.

We doubt anyone is missing it!

Find Military lingo like ‘vomelet’ and much more here.

3.) Beef Enchilada

This may sound good in theory, but Military Personnel avoid this one at all costs.

The strange texture and flavor of this MRE sent service members scrambling to trade for something better, or at least something they could stomach.

Check out this photo of a Soldier in the 80s who got so tired of MREs that he went to McDonald’s in someone else’s Jeep!

4.) Veggie Burger

Although filled with all the necessary nutrients to get the job done (like all MREs), this one was not popular among Service Members.

The mixture of stale bread and rubbery patty made the veggie burger heavily disliked.

5.) Dehydrated Beef and Pork Patties

These dehydrated patties were a least favorite option about 30 years ago. Rehydrating them was like doing a small science experiment – put the patty in the small plastic bag it came with, then fill that with water from your canteen and wait for it to become edible.

While these were liked by some, they were hated by more. They also came with dehydrated ketchup powder packets.
