What is the History of Memorial Day?

Originally called ‘Declaration Day’, the national day of remembrance originates from the late 19th century, after the Civil War. Waterloo, New York has been credited as the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

When is Memorial Day?

In the past, Memorial Day was celebrated on the 30th of May. However, it now takes place on the last Monday of every May.

Memorial Day Flag Etiquette

According to Federal statute 4 U.S. Code Section 7, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.

The term half-staff means, “the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff”.

Parades

Many people choose to honor and celebrate Memorial Day by attending parades. There are thousands of parades that take place across the country every year for the holiday. Although they will be taking place on your screen this year, many people are still fiercely dedicated to honoring our country’s fallen heroes.

Virtual parades aren’t difficult to find – search for one near you or add one you know of on our Memorial Day Parade Directory.

Put on some patriotic clothes, grab a snack, and enjoy the floats and remembrance ceremonies from the comfort of your couch.
